Fish Tales
Welcome
to Fish Tales
We believe educating the youth of today is the key to a sustainable
future for the worlds oceans.
“With knowledge comes the responsibility to act.”
- National Geographic
Along with our mascot, Sammi the Shark, our aim is to work with
local youth in Asia Pacific’s top dive locations, to empower
them to make decisions which are favourable to the environment and
the community. We want to help build sustainable futures from which
communities can profit from.
This program is funded by profits made
when you book a REEFsponsible Holiday.
How?
-
Classroom
sessions - Fun and interactive presentation that help to understand
the complex underwater world, its inhabitants and the habitats which
they call home.
- School programs - Developing programs like Fish
Club, Fish Tales reading groups etc. to encourage continuing education.
- In-water experience programs - Divers are often
referred to as Ambassadors of the underwater world. Because we have
the opportunity to experience diving, we enjoy and care about this
environment. Let’s help more youth experience and enjoy the
underwater world.
- Partner programs - Many of the dive operators we
promote in this network already have successful conservation and
community development programs in place which we raise awareness
for and support.
Our
commitment
Fish Tales success is rooted in a good working relationship with
our partners. The dive industry is big and profitable at times, but
this needs to be controlled and monitored. This network serves as
a forum to bring attention to operators who work towards a healthy
future. We make a commitment to be a driving force within the industry
by lobbying for change and healthy development, together with our
partners and divers like you.
Volunteers anyone?

Why
did we choose Sammi the Shark?
You may ask why we choose a shark, often interpreted as scary, as
a mascot for a youth education program? Well, we’ve got our
reasons.
- Asia is the largest market for shark fins for shark fin soup.
This is the key reason sharks are being over fished and some species
future are in peril. Read more about shark
finning here.
- The stigma needs to be broken down that sharks are scary, man
eaters that seek out and attack humans. Humans are in fact shark's
biggest predator.
- Sharks have a unique identifier, their dorsal fin, which is similar
to a human's fingerprint and this will be introduced in the program.
Sammi will be responsible for portraying this message, which will
differ depending on age group and location. Some topics of interest
include pollution, safe fishing practices, turtle conservation, shark
fining and long lining.
