Dive Pulau Tioman

A small island located 32 kms off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Tioman’s striking profile including the three granite peaks is the first thing you notice. Its beaches washed by the blue-green waters of the South China Sea, turtle-shaped Pulau Tioman is the largest and most impressive of the east coast islands. Its sheer size (20 kms long and 11 kms wide) has allowed for a number of guest houses and chalets to pop up around the coast of the island. The densely forested island is sparsely inhabited, and is surrounded by numerous coral reefs, making it a popular scuba diving spot.

There is so much for divers of all levels here, from the outer islands where it is possible to see a myriad of marine life with giant groupers, black tip reef sharks and turtles, down to the array of nudibranchs and macro life. Then there are the closer sites, a string of shallow coral reefs home to an incredible amount of reef fish and coral species as well as frequent visits from the curious turtles.

There are more than a dozen wrecks around Tioman mainly wooden fishing trawlers, some in shallow waters creating a safe area to develop your skills and have fun at the same time. The fact that Tioman is one of the few places in Asia you are likely to be accompanied by a friendly pod of dolphin on your way to the dive sites just adds to the adventure.

Apart from its diverse marine life, the inland rainforest area in Tioman is a strictly enforced nature reserve. There are several protected species of mammals on the island, including the Binturong, Long-tailed Macaque, Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Mouse deer and Brush tailed Porcupine from a total of 45 species of mammals and 138 species of birds, including the majestic Frigatebird. Moreover, Tioman has species that are endemic to its shores. The soft-shelled turtle and the Tioman walking catfish are both unique and can be seen on rainforest walks.

Tioman Island is an enchanting jewel in the South China Sea. It’s a mythical place equipped with its own legend, giving you the perfect tale to take home with you.
